11 Yr olds Gold Panning Campout
We got to camp out along a section of river in Plumas Natl Forest that is part of a gold claim.
The boys got to see what it's like to search for gold, just as they did back in 1849.
The process involved digging in the right spots along the river, screening out the larger rocks and minerals.

Then the smaller stuff is ran through a Sluice box. Gold is a heavy mineral so it doesn't flow through the box, it settles in the ridges. After only a couple buckets full of sand and gravel we started to see small flakes and flecks of gold shimmer in our boxes. So cool!
After the small minerals, rocks, and gold are caught in the boxes, it's time to inspect the small stuff in a gold pan..

Thanks to Bruce Jernigan and his 2 partners for letting us come up and mine their gold.
